According to Jordanian Public Safety officials state that on average two people are killed and fifty more are injured in 145 road accidents each day. The desert highways in the country tend to be dangerous because they are narrow, winding, steep and have heavy truck traffic. A few years ago I took a taxi from the border crossing in Eliat in Palestine (Israel) to Petra on the desert highway. The long ride was beautiful, hot, and quite harrowing as the taxi traveled at speeds well over 100mph and made several passing manuevers that were very high risk. In Jordan the taxis make very load beeping noises if they exceed the legal speed- the noise was quite annoying and present most of the long trip! We were stopped twice by the police, not for speeding but rather to check and make sure we were not being kidnapped ( or so the driver told us). However the people were very nice and the Ancient Nabatean city of Petra quite sublime! BK 11/07
