I put my 2007 BMW X3 in the garage to quickly get out and get my Iced Tea which I forgot on the kitchen table. When i came back, my car moved 15 Feet and was backwards, down a hill, into a tree.
I called BMW Corporate out of pure anger to complain about the transmission. The next day, I went to the BMW Dealer to see if they could find a problem.
They told me that this happens quite often. You park your car for a second to get something and it simultaneously goes in reverse. It happens because many people use the ashtray in BMW's and Mini's as a place to hold coins. Unfortunately, a coin rolled foreword to the transmission where it stopped it from going into park. It was not in reverse though; it was somewhere between Park and Reverse. Since I left the keys in the ignition, the transmission had a mind of it's own and decided to go into reverse.
The service guy told me I didn't have the worst case. He said about a month earlier, a man in a Mini Cooper left it in the garage to get something, leaving the door open. The car went in reverse, lost a door, and went into a busy intersection.
Still, $3,000 in repairs is still pretty bad.
