Van Backs into Dumpster

On my recent trip to Vigo, Spain, we rented a Ford van to carry all ten of us to Portugal for the day and back. (July 4, 2008) The van was big, so it had poor visibility which was only lessened when our driver, Antonio, accidentally brushed a wall on a narrow street to avoid another car coming the opposite direction. He barely touched the wall, but it was enough to fold in the passenger side mirror.
Later that night when we had reached the apartment building where we were staying, Antonio had to parallel park to let us out. He had forgotten the mirror was folded in, and reversed at a high speed anyway. With poor rear visibility he had no idea of the dumpster behind the van, which he promptly hit. I was awake, but most of the rest of my family riding in the van was not, so they were jolted by a rude awakening.
The van's bumper was too low and the dumpster too high for them to make contact, and instead the rear door and taillight took the brunt of the damage. For the speed we were going,
(probably 15mph) the damage was low, which was good. Right after we had hit the dumpster bystanders on the sidewalk came to the van, unfolded the mirror, gave a thumbs up, and walked away. I included a diagram to help explain what happened. In one of the pictures you can see my disgruntled cousin exiting the van after the crash.
When in Spain... Watch out for dumpsters.
