STORY:
Monday, October 13, 2008 18:00PM, it is dusk out and a chill is in the air, I am at the corner of Second St. and Spruce St., Chelsea, MA. I just got out of work and pulled behind a 2000 Dodge Caravan, as there was a "red light" and we were both turning left. The next thing I remember is a very loud bang, flying glass, and going forward at a fair clip into the back of the Dodge Caravan directly in front of me. A few seconds went by and it is dawning on me as I try to pull myself out from the rear of my extended cab 2004 Ford Edge Pickup Truck, that I have been in an accident. Hit from behind by something going very fast. Police would later state the vehicle that hit me was traveling at a very fast rate of speed.
Getting out I see this man walking very slowly towards me through a fog of radiator steam saying, "man, I am so sorry but my brakes did not work! Are you ok"? Besides being bruised in both of his legs the driver of a 1995 Chevrolet Tahoe was ok. I mumble something about yes, I think I am ok, but my eyes are transfixed on a St. Christopher Medal that must have flown off my visor out thru the rear truck wiundow onto the mangled black tarp of my truck bed! I am amazed that this small thin metal medal is unblemished and now seems even brighter to me. It holds my attention until the police and fire trucks arrive.
I discover slowly that I have cuts on my hands and back of my head from the flying shards of the rear windows smashing from the truck bed crashing into the back of the cab, not to mention both legs were bruised pretty good from hitting the dashboard. I had my seatbellt on thank the Lord. The woman driving the Dodge Caravan that I hit was shaken but ok. No one went on any ambulance rides. All three cars were towed away. The 1995 Chevy Tahoe was Totaled as well as the 2004 Ford Ranger Edge Extended Cab. What makes this interesting is the saying I had painted on my Tailgate, "Happy Trails To You" when I had purchased the truck. I found it to be quite sad knowing it was all over.
MORAL: YOU NEVER EVER KNOW WHEN YOU WILL HAVE YOUR ACCIDENT, SO BUCKLE UP ALWAYS BEFORE STARTING THE VEHICLE. SEATBELTS DO SAVE LIVES!
Sincerely,
Edward D. T.
