April 5th, 2008. A dark rainy night in eastern Hillsborough County, Florida at the intersection of Hwy 39 and Sam Allen Road (Plant City, FL). While sitting at a stop light in her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LT, waiting for it to turn green, my daughter was rear-ended by a 1980-something Mercury Grand Marquis which was piloted by a drunk, unlicensed, uninsured, undocumented alien, driving someone else’s car who was also uninsured.

Drunk, Unlicensed, Uninsured, and Undocumented

April 5th, 2008. A dark rainy night in eastern Hillsborough County, Florida at the intersection of Hwy 39 and Sam Allen Road (Plant City, FL). While sitting at a stop light in her 2006 Chevrolet Cobalt LT, waiting for it to turn green, my daughter was rear-ended by a 1980-something Mercury Grand Marquis which was piloted by a drunk, unlicensed, uninsured, undocumented alien, driving someone else’s car who was also uninsured. The force of the impact pushed my daughters’ car all the way through the intersection, where her car came to stop over 170 feet from the point of impact. I don’t know a lot about physics, but I know it takes a lot of energy to propel 2 tons 172 feet from a dead stop.

My daughter, being the ever-vigilant driver insisted that everyone buckle-up before they left (she had 1 passenger who never buckles up). Everyone did buckle up, and as a result everyone in my daughter’s car was spared – only minor injuries (at the scene), but everyone in my daughter’s car has lingering back issues, which is always better than being dead. Mere seconds before the impact she noticed the car bearing down on her and told everyone “This guy’s going to hit us.” Thankfully, the little Coby did exactly what it was supposed to do: give up its life to protect the occupants. The car was totaled by the insurance company.

Oh, I forgot to mention: the drunk tried to run away after the accident but was stopped by two of the young men in her car.
