14 MAR 2006 01.00 I was driving at a speed of approximately 110km/h on a national road at night. The temperature was approximately 5°C but the road seemed not to be icy (tested with braking). At a certain stage, I reached a hill where at the end of the ascension a very steep turn to the right was present. Having taken the turn, the car slightly understeered so I automatically corrected it with extra gas. However, practically out of the blue, there was a construction site on my side of the road with no lights indicating presence nor any warning signs.
I swerved away to the left, whilst controlling the understeer I got just earlier and on top of everything, when I tried swirving back on the right, the rear probably cought some slippery tarmac and the car oversteered and sent the rear sideways.
The rear of the car flicked out and knocked down 4 field fence posts which were made out or big heavy railroad timbers.
Vitally, my passengers and I were all fastened in our seatbelts. As the driver, I had absolutely no damage. However, two side airbags in my seat and one curtain airbag on the left side of my head detonated. The pyrotechnical seatbelt tensioners worked too.
The passenger sitting behind me, whose door got all the blows, had the same airbag safety and all the airbags worked. The door opened after the accident without problems. That passenger had one scratch on his face from a piece of glass from the broken window.
The last passenger sitting next to me had no airbag detonation and absolutely no damage either. The photos were taken the next day at the garage. Personally, I was impressed with the safety level of the car Volvo S40.
