The evening before my LAST day of class (06/03/2005), I'm heading west on S.R. 528 (Beeline) in Orlando, FL. It's been drizzling, so I'm alert and cautious in my 2002 4WD TrailBlazer. I'm doing UNDER the speed limit (unusual but lucky for me!), 48mph.
I feel the back end start to slooooooowly come around on my right, and immediately back off the gas and stay away from the brake. Funny, I have plenty of time to think about "steer in the direction of the skid" as I ever-so-gently turn the steering wheel, with no response, of course. I watch transfixed as the metal guardrail on the right side of the road (3 lanes of traffic away) approaches. BLAM!
After a fast mental inventory, I begin to think, "well, that wasn't too bad", then I realize I'M STILL MOVING!!!! Now, I'm heading for the concrete guardrail (yep, back across those 3 lanes!). I slammed sideways into the concrete guardrail and my E-ticket ride was over.
Damage to me: nominal. A couple of cracked ribs from the center console and a HUGE goose egg where my head banged into the driver door's window. (turned out it was a concussion, so maybe not so nominal)
Damage to car: well, not so small. Insurance company totaled the car. The front axle was broken and 3 of the 4 sides were pretty badly damaged.
The humor: I was wearing stud earrings and the front (pearl) part of the earring ended up on the floor at my feet; the back was still on my ear!
The miracle: this was on a busy highway at 5pm Friday Rush Hour. I hit no one and no one hit me. It was just me and the guardrails.
