On Friday 17 November 2006 my wife was taking a turn driving our "X" registered BMW 318ti Auto SE Compact on the journey from South Devon to East Yorkshire. At approximately 11am in clear, dry conditions, the car veered without warning across the A46 Evesham bypass, ran along a guard rail and collided with a bridge pier. The driver, who broke her left femur and kneecap, recalled that the car refused to respond to brakes and steering and in fact accelerated. She is positive that she had not fallen asleep.We were trapped in the car for two hours while rescuers cut off the two doors and the roof and my wife is still, over one year later, suffering from the effects of her injuries. The car was written off as a total loss. Our black cat which was travelling in a well-padded carry-cage on the back seat escaped unhurt. As front seat passenger I sustained abrasions and bruising.
As no one else was involved and we were lucky to be alive the police did not examine the vehicle for possible cause of the crash but we suspect a failure of some component. We would welcome accounts of other similar incidents with BMWs.
