I was on my way home to Ada, MI on August 31st 2007. I was in Oceana County, MI when I came upon a line of several cars on a two lane state highway. I thought that I could pass them all. It was a straight stretch of road, so I thought I could see far enough ahead. In the line, in order, I saw a minivan, a Jeep and a hard-sided camper. I pulled into the other lane and floored it. When I got up to the minivan, I realized that the camper was at least 35 feet long and that there was a tanker truck right in front of that. I kept on going thinking that I could make it. When I caught up to the Jeep, I see a large pickup coming head on. I was probably going around 90 when I first saw it. I couldn't see it before because of the glare on the road. It was still a long ways off. I looked ahead to see if I could make it in front of the tanker but I realized that was impossible. I thought about hitting the brakes, but I didn't want to risk a head on collision. I decided to pull of onto the shoulder and go past the pickup. Just as I was pulling off the road, the pickup did the same. I then pulled further to the left and went onto the grass next to the road. I estimate I was going between 50-60 mph when I hit the grass. I went down into a ditch and up an embankment on the other side. It was angled up at about 45 degrees. As I was going up, I thought that I was going to roll. I got over the top of the embankment and the car skidded to a stop about twenty feet away.
I was completely unhurt. However, the front bumper cover of the car was pulled under and mostly torn off. The A/C condenser was punctured. All four tires still held air and the car was still running. The airbag never deployed and my hands never left the wheel. Somehow I remained relaxed during the entire thing. After hauling the car back home I realized that the passenger's side front wheel was way off camber and caused the car to pull to the left really bad. All the parts under the car were either pulled off to move the car or they came off before I stopped. The tires were removed so that I could inspect the suspension. I have yet to decide whether I am going to fix the car myself or sell it as is.
I definitely learned my lesson and will never doing anything that stupid again. I loved that car and I really don't have enough money to fix it. I was planning to sell the car in a few months to get something more powerful, but that is not an option anymore. Tim V.
