Head On Crash September 16, 2005 in Spencer, Indiana (IN 67 and IN 46)So here's the story. I was returning home from Bloomington, IN after seeing a friend of my fiance's perform at a local club when to my surprise I was rounding a bend in the road when I saw headlights in my lane. At first I couldn't believe it and the first thing I asked by fiance was if I was in the right line, could I have turned onto a one way or an opposing turn lane?
No, I just was up against a vehicle that had three drunk (and interestingly enough at least one was illegal) hispanic men. Luckily I was already going slower than the speed limit being it was dark unlit curve and was heavily breaking by the time of impact (several feet of ABS skid marks we visable) and hit at between 20-30mph.
Both of us were wearing our seatbelts and our vehicle absorbed enough of the energy that the airbags didn't deploy allowing us to walk away with nothing more than a bruise on my right shin where it hit the knee bolster when I slid forward a bit and a seatbelt bruise on my fiance's shoulder.
The other crew wasn't as fortunate, at least one man ( the backseat passenger according to the firemen that arrived) was partially ejected from the vehicle.
Immediately after impact the two relatively uninjured men got their comrade out of the vehicle and standing near the side of the road. After talking briefly in spanish they bolted down the embankment and into the woods.
My vehicle was a brand new 2005 Chevrolet Suburban with 6000 miles on the odometer I had purchased that summer. My Insurance company (progressive) spent no time getting my vehicle in a shop and repaired. Three months and $22,000 later the insurance had my vehicle back to me (complete new frame shipped from texas).
As you can see from the pictures safety equipment makes all the difference. Crumple zones and automatic tightening seatbelts left myself and my fiance with nothing but memories.
Bryan
P.S. Always take a picture of the driver of the person involved in the collision with you. I did keep a camera with me as is recommended, but I didn't have the presence of mind to take a picture of the driver or the other passenger that ran away.
