This red Chevy Avalanche crashed in the Gardner River Canyon in Yellowstone national park. The truck skidded for over 160 feet, hit a guardrail, and fell 45 feet down an embankment, landed along the riverbank. One person was killed and another seriously injured. The crash happenedin September 2006 around midnight on the road between Mammoth Hot Springs and the Yellowstone National Park North Entrance in Montana.
At least 25 National Park Service rescue personnel aalong with local EMS and fire crews managed to tun the truck upright and used a rope to rescue to remove the male driver from the wreckage. The driver was a 27 year old from Michigan. He was flown by Air Idaho Rescue helicopter to Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls where he was hospitalized. The passenger, a 27 year old woman also from Michigan, died at the scene.
Alcohol consumption was involved according to the National Park Service press release, and Special Agents sought a Federal arrest warrant for the driver. NPS rangers and agents are leading the investigation with assistance from the Montana Highway Patrol, the Park County, Montana, Coroner, and the Park County, Montana, Sheriff's Department. This is was the third fatal accident in Yellowstone National Park in 2006.
