In November of 2001, I had decided that I wanted to get a
brand new car since I had had my 1988 Plymouth Sundance for fourteen
years. It would be a nice early Christmas present to me. I really
liked the new 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS so I bought one. For some
reason, I felt that I wouldn't have the car for very long and
I was right. After being out shopping with my mother all morning
and part of the afternoon on Sunday, December 9, 2001, I left
my parents' house around 2:30 p.m. I was going East on Ball Road
in Anaheim, CA when the safety arms at a railroad track up ahead
began to go down. I stopped along with the rest of the traffic.
A freight train went through the intersection and just as the
arms went up and traffic began to slowly move forward, I started
moving at about 10 mph when a 1994 Jeep Cherokee driven by a
67 year old man (his wife as passenger) slammed into the back
of my car at 45 miles per hour. I slammed my foot on the brake,
but the car skidded forward over 6 feet and the driver's seat
collasped. I watched as my back window exploded and shards of
glass flew outside and inside the car.
I remember sitting up to put the car in park and shutting off
the engine. I was shaking so bad and completely disoriented.
I had never been in an accident like that before and I was upset
because I knew I had lost my car. The driver of the Jeep appeared
at the passenger side and he asked me if there was anyone he
could call for me. I didn't even want to talk to him after what
he had done. Then a woman and her son appeared at the drivers
window and they called 911.
Another woman appeared (turned out she was a nurse) and she held
my hand and talked to me until the paramedics and police showed
up. I was taken to emergency with luckily only soft tissue injuries
to my neck and shoulders. My Sonata was totaled. The Jeep driver
was found at fault and I hired an attorney to get a settlement
and to stop the hospital, ambulance company and the Jeep driver's
insurance company from calling me and bugging me. Finally, after
almost 7 months, my attorney got a settlement of $15,000 and
I got $5,000 free and clear (which I paid a credit card off with).
I now own another 2002 Hyundai Sonata GLS and have had it over
a year now. So far no accidents - knock on wood!
