This was my 1997 Pontiac Grand Am. My mom proved (again) that she was right, and I have learned to accept her wisdom.
Brett age 17 July 17, 2004. Near Utica, NY About 3/10 of a mile from home.
I was driving on a junior license. This means that I am not supposed to be on the road between 9 pm and 5 am. I thought I was invincible (don't we all) and that Mom would never know (she did) that I was staying at Dad's house because he didn't make me come home with the car by 9. Mom always did.
This accident occurred at 3:30 am. I fell asleep driving. As you can see from the photos, the car hit a pole and overturned. The impact was to the driver side front. The front end was pushed back as far as the wheel, The engine was pushed back against the firewall. The roof was crushed down about 9" on the driver side, Almost all the glass in the car was smashed. Both airbags deployed. The pole fell and the transformer caught on fire. The streetlight was smashed, and there was no electric, phone or cable in my neighborhood for about 6 hours.
I was completely disoriented. I remember feeling for my cell phone but feeling something strange. Once I figured out that I was touching the pavement, I realized the car was upside-down. There was smoke pouring through the car. I thought that the car was on fire. I was able to unbuckle myself and crawl out the back window.
Luckily, I did have my seatbelt on. If I didn't, I would have been history. I remember my head hitting the sunroof. If it wasn't for the seatbelt, I think that my head would have gone through and would have been crushed when the car flipped. I didn't require medical care, but Mom evaluated my injuries very closely every couple hours. I was sore for weeks. I had huge bruises from the seatbelt. Every muscle in my body ached. My nose was incredibly sore, I figure from the airbag.
Although I was out a car I was lucky. Just how lucky I was really hit home later that week. Four days after my accident another young boy did the same thing. He didn't have his seatbelt on, and he was not so fortunate.
I learned two valuable lessons. ALWAYS WEAR A SEATBELT and LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER!!!!
