In Etna, Maine two tractor trailers collided March 22, 2007. One was going slow and the other did not realize how slow they was moving and rear ended the other tractor. The driver of the truck was trapped in the truck. The whole engine and transmission came in on the driver. Thats a big engine to have on you! It took them more then 30 minutes to extract the driver. Below is the newspaper account summary.A tractor trailer truck was traveling north on Interstate 95 when it crashed into a big rig being hauled by a tow truck around 10:30 a.m. 3/22/07 south of the Etna exit. The driver was heading north on I-95 when approached another tractor-trailer loaded with peat moss being towed up the highway by a wrecker. The driver didn't realize the vehicle in tow was moving at a much slower rate of speed, and rear ended it.
The tractor-trailer jackknifed, and then caught on fire halting all northbound traffic for many hours. The impact from the crash pushed the engine compartment into the 18-wheeler's cab, pinning truck driver in the tangled metal- but he was extricated with non life threatening injuries. According to fire rescue the drivers: "legs were wrapped up with the clutch and the brake pedal," It took rescue crews 30 minutes, and creative thinking to free him. Fire crews were unsuccessful with the hydraulic extraction equipment, a local tow truck driver suggested using the winch to pull the crushed floorboard forward. This worked and the driver was freed.
