On March 9, 2006 my wife and I were driving from Wichita Falls,
TX to Rapid City, SD(home). I'm in the Air Force and was stationed
there so we were moving some of our stuff with us so the back
of my wifes little 2001 Suzuki Esteem was packed full.
We had gotten to Salena, KS and decided to take I-70 west. With
my wife driving and just a few miles outside of town, the rear
passenger tire blew as we were passing a semi truck. We fishtaled
a few times and ended up swerving in front of the semi doing
about 65mph at this point and we caught the corner of his bumper
right behind the rear tire. We pretty much just richocheted off
of him and spun out into the median. We finally stopped almost
100 yards from where we entered the medain after I pulled the
E-brake turned 180 degrees around.
The only injury was my wife got wiplash. It totalled the car
many times over. After walking around after the accident I realized
that for about 10 feet, both passenger tires lifted off the ground
enough not to leave a mark in the grass, if we were going any
faster, if the medain was steaper, just about anything, we would
have rolled it. Farmers Insurance took really good care of us,
I'd recommend them to anyone.
The kicker of the whole story is that both of the back tires
were less than 2 weeks old, and less than 1500 miles.
